Provide Waste Management Solutions
Through a Research and Community Service (PPM) program titled “FT Mengabdi,” faculty members educated the community on waste processing and management and provided necessary support in the form of supplies and equipment.
“This PPM activity is one of the Three Pillars of Higher Education for a faculty member. In addition to teaching, faculty members also conduct research,” said the Dean of the FT at Unsri, Dr. Ir. Bhakti Yudho Suprapto, ST, MT, IPM, during the opening of the event.
In the 2024 fiscal year, the PPM program is funded through the Faculty of Engineering’s 2024 regular PNBP (State Non-Tax Revenue) scheme.
“This year, we’ve identified villages in need of assistance. This is a solution the Faculty of Engineering can provide through its various academic disciplines,” he explained.
A few months ago, the FT Leadership Team, together with the Research and Community Service Unit (UPPM), visited Seri Kembang I Village and held discussions with the village leaders there. “This resulted in information regarding the village’s challenges that the FT can help address, specifically in the area of waste management,” said Bhakti.
This issue was then presented to the faculty members, with the aim of having them contribute their expertise and provide solutions. They subsequently submitted Community Service (PPM) proposals, the activities of which are funded by the Faculty of Engineering.
The selection process for these proposals resulted in 11 PPM activities. Among them were the dissemination of Household Waste Management activities, Empowering the Community’s Role in Household Waste Management, Community-Based Waste Management, Education on the Use of Energy-Generating Equipment to Support Waste Management, Organic Waste Shredders, Inorganic Waste Shredders, Provision of Energy Sources to Power Shredders, Catalyst-Free Pyrolysis of Household Plastic Waste, Conversion of Plastic Waste into Eco-Brick for Green Spaces, Application of a Combustion Furnace for Producing Bio-Briquettes from Organic Waste, Development of an IoT-Based Smart Composter for Household Waste Processing.
Each activity was chaired by Dr. Ir. Bhakti Yudho Suprapto, ST, MT, IPM; Anthony Costa, ST, MT; Fajri Romdhoni, ST, MT, PhD; Ir. Irsyadi Yani, ST, MEng, PhD; Gunawan, B.S., M.S., Dr. Ismail Thamrin, B.S., M.S., Ir. Abdul Haris Dalimunthe, B.S., M.S., Dr. David Bahrin, B.S., M.S., Rizka Wulandari Putri, B.S., M.S., Rahmatullah, B.S., M.S., and Dr. Budi Santoso, B.S., M.S.
The FT Unsri Community Service Program received a warm reception and appreciation from the community. The event was also attended by the Village Head of Seri Kembang I, Wendra, and the Village Secretary, Marison; the Associate Dean for General Affairs, Dr. Ir. Bimo Brata Adhitya, ST, MT; the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Dr. Ir. David Bahrain, ST, MT; as well as the chair and members of the activity, consisting of faculty members from the Faculty of Engineering
Participants in the event were residents of Seri Kembang I Village. The PPM event was moderated by the Chair of the FT UPPM, Dr. Ir. Rosidawani, ST, MT, and consisted of presentations and outreach sessions on the program’s content by each PPM team leader, followed by a question-and-answer session.
“The villagers were enthusiastic about asking questions to the presenters who delivered the material. The event concluded with a symbolic handover of trash bins and a group photo,” added the Chair of the UPPM FT, Dr. Ir. Rosidawani, S.T., M.T.
The Village Head of Seri Kembang I, Werda, expressed his gratitude for the PPM program held in his community.
"We hope this activity will be beneficial and help the village community, especially in resolving waste management issues.
This community service activity, themed ‘The Faculty of Engineering Serves,’ is expected to be on target and to continue and improve in the future,” concluded Werda.
