To Strengthen Family Nutrition Literacy, Unsri Faculty and Students Educate 25 Mothers of Toddlers in Parit Village
A total of 25 mothers of toddlers—who are members of the local posyandu group—participated in the activity. The program also involved six students and six faculty members from the Community Education Program at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) of Unsri, as well as officials from Parit Village.
The head of the implementation team, Shomedran, S.Pd., M.Pd., stated that the activity was carried out as a form of concern for issues related to nutrition and child care within the community.
The Community Service (PkM) team from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) at Sriwijaya University presented souvenirs to participant representatives as part of a series of activities supporting family nutrition literacy and care during the first 1,000 Days of Life (HPK) in Parit Village.
During the event, participants received information on balanced nutrition, the importance of exclusive breastfeeding, meeting children’s age-appropriate nutritional needs, and child-rearing during the first 1,000 days of life (HPK).
The materials were presented by Fanny Zakkiyah MR, S.Pd., M.Pd., and Dwi Septyanda, S.Pd., M.Ed. The presentation was followed by a discussion and an interactive question-and-answer session.
Participants were given the opportunity to share the various challenges they face in meeting their children’s nutritional needs and providing daily care. In addition to education, the mentoring also included discussions on parenting practices that support children’s growth and development, early stimulation, and the importance of monitoring toddlers’ growth and development.
The event also featured demonstrations of preparing nutritious meals to provide participants with practical guidance on meeting children’s nutritional needs according to their developmental stages. The organizing team noted that the event was motivated by the ongoing need to strengthen community understanding of family nutrition and child care during the 1,000 HPK period.
Based on initial observations and interviews with Posyandu volunteers and mothers of toddlers in Parit Village, the team identified a need for more comprehensive information on balanced nutrition, exclusive breastfeeding, and parenting practices that support children’s growth and development. Therefore, the guidance was conducted using a participatory approach through educational sessions, discussions, hands-on activities, and evaluations to help participants understand the material presented.
The series of activities began with opening remarks by Shomedran, the team leader, followed by a presentation on family nutrition literacy and meeting nutritional needs during the first 1,000 days of life.
After the presentation, the session continued with discussions, a question-and-answer session, and guidance on parenting practices and early stimulation. Participants also took pre- and post-tests to assess their understanding before and after the program.
The faculty team involved consisted of Shomedran, S.Pd., M.Pd., Andika Pratama, S.Pd., M.Pd., Ardi Saputra, S.Pd., M.Sc., Dr. Henny Helmi, S.Pd., M.Pd., Dwi Septyanda, S.Pd., M.Ed., and Fanny Zakkiyah MR, S.Pd., M.Pd. Throughout the event, participants were actively engaged in both discussions and hands-on activities. The presence of village officials also served as a form of support and collaboration in carrying out the activity.
Through this mentoring program, the Unsri community service team hopes that mothers of toddlers will further improve their knowledge and skills in meeting their children’s nutritional needs and implementing appropriate parenting practices. This mentoring is expected to serve as a first step toward fostering family awareness and self-reliance in supporting children’s growth and development, while also supporting early efforts to prevent stunting.
